Planning to grow your business this year? Alexander Florio, co-founder of Futurpreneur-supported business Swob, provides some tips for recruitment and managing millennials in the changing workplace culture.

When recruiting in today’s workforce, it is important to keep in mind the different trends amongst millennials. We’ve all heard the stereotypes, however the fact is millennials are changing the workforce and workplace culture, and employers need to recognize this and adapt. In fact, millennials makeup the largest segment in the workplace, with the percentage increasing.

Before hiring a millennial, it is important to note that there are multiple factors that need to be considered. Here are 5 tips to keep in mind when recruiting millennials into your business.

1. Create a strong company culture

There is a misconception that millennial workers don’t seek meaningful employment. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Millennials appreciate a challenging work environment, and even find it rewarding. It’s when there is a poor company culture that you will find an employee feel discouraged. When creating an environment that is not only challenging, but appealing and rewarding, you will get the best out of your employees!

2. Be open to a new opinion

Having a culture where employees can feel open enough to share their opinions and ideas without being immediately shot down is important to millennial workers.

Millennials are often thinking about new and progressive ways to reach new audiences, and when given the freedom to share their ideas, you will see a positive attitude when working on a task. In order to get the best opinions out of your employees, ask them questions. Get their feedback! If they feel that their opinion is being valued, you will have an increase in productivity and original opinions to help your business grow.

3. Provide mentorship and feedback

Millennial workers are eager, hardworking and ambitious. They thrive on receiving feedback, even if it’s not always positive, as they can take the feedback and learn from it. Millennials want to make a difference in the workplace and are enthusiastic when given the right opportunities. To get the best out of your millennial employee, provide feedback and provide opportunities to grow within the organization.

4. Embrace new technology

Millennials love technology. They are tech savvy, and can contribute in multiple ways just from their knowledge on new technologies. Often times, many employers have an “old school” approach, and don’t want to embrace new technology. However, embrace this and view it as an opportunity, and you won’t be disappointed! If you ask questions about what is new and current in the world of technology, you will be amazed with how many new technologies can help improve and strengthen your business.

5. Provide an opportunity

When given the right opportunities, millennials can surprise you with how much they can achieve and bring to an organization. They embrace opportunity and have strong leadership qualities, that can have a profoundly positive effect at work. Always keep in mind new opportunities to provide your employees, and you will be sure to notice the benefits!
