Open with a clear explanation of what you do. You should be able to communicate this in one or two sentences. For example, you can say “our company provides a better way to manage all your contacts in one place.” In many cases, entrepreneurs pitch for five minutes and the person they are pitching to still does not know what the company is all about. If you cannot explain your company in two sentences, chances are you will not be able to do it in five sentences either, and therefore you should probably gain a better understanding of what you are selling.

In the next sentence, communicate the audience for your product. Do not be too broad, as in “this is a service for any business!” Choose one or two verticals that show the biggest promise and lead with them. You can reference how clients are using your product to have the most up-to-date contact information at their fingertips. Then you will want to mention why your solution is better than any other (secret sauce). Try something like, “we have proprietary technology that saves you time by recognizing duplicate contacts and merging them automatically.” Remember to talk about benefits, not the features.

Finally, you will want to mention traction. Ideally you could speak to your growth percentage week over week or you could mention your pilot deployments at various companies and the feedback you received. Just ensure you are being concise and to the point so that your pitch stands out from the rest.
