In December 2019, the ThriveNorth program successfully completed its five-year mandate. Managed by Futurpreneur Canada, the program helped young entrepreneurs in Northern B.C. launch and grow their businesses by connecting them with resources, financing and mentorship.

Almost every month we host ThriveNorth Start-Up Chat’s in Prince Rupert and Terrace, British Columbia. These chats are an informal opportunity to come chat business with Futurpreneur Canada staff and other business (and aspiring business) members of the community. To clarify what exactly happens at a Start-Up Chat, we chatted with Nathan Hoffart, a local Terrace entrepreneur and Katy Carr, ThriveNorth Project Coordinator to have some of your questions answered.

What is a Start-Up Chat?

A Start-Up Chat is a casual get together where people chat about business, start-ups and networking over coffee. It’s a great place to get feedback and support if you are thinking of starting your own businesses. It is also an opportunity to meet someone from Futurpreneur Canada and learn more about how Futurpreneur can help you turn your business idea into reality.

What happens at a Start-Up Chat?

At a Start-Up Chat, the person hosting will introduce themselves and their relevant entrepreneurial experience and will get to know you and what your business idea is. The Start-Up Chat can be a networking opportunity or a place to talk to other business owners about their journey. It can also be a place to talk to a Futurpreneur Canada staff member and ask any questions about the programs and resources they offer.

Who is the Start-Up Chats for?

Start-Up Chats are for anyone 18-39 who have a burning desire to start their own business. We also welcome anyone with existing businesses who are interested in becoming a mentor with Futurpreneur Canada. Even if you just have an idea, the Start-Up Chat is a perfect place to talk about what it might be like to jump into the world of entrepreneurship and find out which programs exist to new business owners.

How many people usually attend? Will I get individual assistance?

This can vary from place to place, but usually anywhere from 5-15 people will attend a Start-Up Chat, and the person running the chat will make sure to connect with everyone, and give you more information if you would like to set up a time to discuss things in more detail or to apply for financing and mentorship.

What benefits will I get out of a Start-Up Chat?

For starters—you usually get a free lunch or appetizer! You will also learn about the amazing resources, funding, and mentorship that Futurpreneur Canada can provide you to help you achieve your dreams and get the opportunity to network with other young entrepreneurs from your area. There’s absolutely no pressure to apply for programs, or attend any other events, it’s just an opportunity to come out and meet other people who might be in the same boat as you.
