Youth on the Move, A Business Success Story – Ryan Dowling

Ryan Dowling Owner of Dowling Construction

What follows is one story -in a series of stories -that celebrates entrepreneurial success -success made possible not only by the hard work of the business owner, but also by the availability of financing made possible by the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, a program administered locally by Trenval Business Development Corporation.

There are a few mainstay ingredients that power success in a small business. Education and experience top the list. But there is a third must-have attribute: passion. You have to love what you do and take pride in your work. Ryan Dowling of Dowling Construction offers his clients the perfect blend of all three.

Ryan comes from a long line of tradesmen. He has inherited the love of working with his hands, appreciates craftsmanship and the feeling of accomplishment in a job well done. When asked what the positives are to running his own renovation and construction business, he enthusiastically replies “The customer’s reaction to the finished product!!” He cites ‘customer communication’ as a high priority.

He has years of managerial experience and values his lessons learned in business. Those skills help him today. He has set up a professional operation that marries the convention of putting in a hard day physically with running a computer savvy, smart company.

Dowling Construction currently specializes in the finishing work -tiling, flooring, trim, drywall, interior and exterior renovation. But Ryan’s goal is to combine his management background with his trade skill and continue developing as a general contracting company. He will coordinate all aspects of a project on behalf of his client to ensure prompt scheduling, adherence to budget and the assembly of the best team of skilled trades.

Other necessary ingredients for business success are planning and preparation. Ryan is quick to recognize the assistance he received from Trenval throughout the process of his business plan development and launch. “Trenval helped get me up and running and most importantly, set me up with the ongoing advice (mentorship program) and finances to get started”.

Ryan met with Amber Darling, Trenval’s Loans Officer who discussed Trenval’s various programs with him. As he qualified for the Canadian Youth Business Foundation Start-up program, Amber led him though business plan development and arranged for him to meet with the local review committee. His business plan, his presentation to the committee, and most importantly his character convinced the committee to recommend Ryan for CYBF financing. With this start-up capital, Ryan’s business is flourishing.

The CYBF Start-up program requires each young entrepreneur to have a mentor that is available for guidance. Mark McFaul is Ryan’s mentor and Ryan credits him with being “very helpful and insightful”. Mentorship is a true asset of the CYBF program.
