Derrick Hunter


Derrick is the President and CEO of Bluesky Equities Ltd., an investment management company with interests in real estate, energy, distilling, technology and alternative strategies. He has been an active member of the local Angel investment community for many years. Bluesky Equities is one of the most active angel-investors in Southern Alberta having invested in over sixty start-up businesses. Derrick is also a Founder and Fellow of Creative Destruction Lab – Rockies.

Derrick is a Trustee of the Hunter Family Foundation which created the “Hunter Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation” at the Haskayne School of Business in 2013 and the “Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking” at the University of Calgary in May 2017. He sits on the External Advisory Committee of both entities and is Chairman of the Hunter Hub.

In the not-for-profit sector, he is a member of the Management Advisory Council at the Haskayne School of Business and serves on the boards of Futurpreneur Canada, the Beakerhead Creative Society, the Alberta Cancer Foundation Charity Classic and the University of Calgary Energy New Venture Competition.

Derrick is a graduate of Queen’s University and the University of Calgary. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). He was the 2018 recipient of the Management Alumni Excellence (MAX) award from the Haskayne School of Business. Derrick was also named Canadian Angel Investor of the Year for 2019 by the National Angel Capital Organization as well as 2019 Alberta Tech Investor of the Year by TEC Edmonton.
