Derrick Hunter


Derrick Hunter is the President of Bluesky Equities Ltd., an investment management company with interests in real estate, energy, distilling and alternative strategies. Over the past two decades he has founded or co-founded 14 companies including several exploration companies, two technology companies and a property management firm.

He has been an active member of the local angel investment community for the past ten years. Bluesky Equities is one of the most active angel investors in Southern Alberta having invested in over two dozen local start-up businesses during that period.

Derrick currently sits on the boards of two software companies, a film finance company and a real estate investment corporation. He is also a Trustee of the Hunter Family Foundation which, in 2013, made a transformative gift to the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary when it created the “Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation”.

In the not-for-profit sector, he is a member of the Management Advisory Council at the Haskayne School of Business and serves on the boards of the Energy New Ventures Competition, the Beakerhead Creative Society, the Alberta Cancer Foundation Charity Classic and the EO Global Banff University. He was previously the Finance Chair of the Calgary Chapter of Entrepreneurs Organization and founding Treasurer of New Heights Early Learning Services Society.

Derrick is a graduate of Queen’s University (B.Sc. – Geology) and the University of Calgary (MBA – Finance). He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) and the Entrepreneurs Organization.
