Owner of Waterloo-based Allerta Inc., Eric Migicovsky knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur ever since he was 16 and working for his uncle’s start-up. He loved doing different kinds of odd-jobs in an exciting work environment.  The exhilaration he felt working with his entrepreneurial uncle was something he missed when he began his co-op placements while studying at the University of Waterloo.

In the fall of 2008, Eric joined VeloCity, a tech-focused incubator-residence at the University of Waterloo. At VeloCity, he was able to complete his engineering degree, while simultaneously starting-up Allerta, a smartphone accessories design firm. When Eric graduated in April 2009, Allerta hit the ground running.

Years later, Eric now gets to relive the same exhilerating rush of entreperneurship he felt at age 16, working at his uncle’s start-up.

“I love working as an entrepreneur because of the direct connection I have to the product,” Eric says. “Every action I take has a direct effect on how the company performs and how our plans evolve. It’s a great feeling which comes with a lot of responsibility, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
